Carbon and its compounds Important Questions and Answers

CBSE Class 10 Important Question and Answers of Carbon and Its compounds Sample paper 2017

1.A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved when ethanoi c acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate. Name the salt X and the gas evolved. D escribe an activity and draw the diagram of the apparatus to prove that the evo lved gas is the one which you have named. Also, write chemical equation of the reaction involved.

Ans. Salt X is sodium ethanoate and the evolved gas is car bon dioxide. Take a test tube and take ethanoic acid in it. Add sodium bicarbonate to th e acid. Close the mouth of the test tube with a cork and attach a delivery tube to it. Ta ke lime water in another test tube and attach this with another and of delivery tube. You will observe that the lime water turns milky. Th is shows that the evolved gas is carbon dioxide. Following reaction takes place between ethanoic acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate.

2. (a) What are hydrocarbons? Give examples.

Ans. Compounds of hydrogen and carbon are called hydrocarbons, e.g. methane, ethane, ethene, etc.

(b) Give the structural differences between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons with two examples each.

Ans. All the bonds in saturated hydrocarbons (except in act ive radicals) are single bonds but double or triple bond is present in unsaturated hy drocarbons. Examples of saturated hydrocarbons: Ethane and metha ne Examples of unsaturated hydrocarbons: Ethyne and ethe ne

(c) What is a functional group? Give examples of four dif ferent functional groups.

Ans. Functional group – An atom/group of atoms joined in a spe cific manner which is responsible for the characteristic chemical properties of the organic compounds.

3.Name the reaction which is commonly used in the conver sion of vegetable oils to fats. Explain the reaction involved in detail.

Ans. Addition reaction is used in the conversion of vegetabl e oils to fats. This is called hydrogenation of oil. Vegetable oils generally have long chains of unsaturated carbons, while animal fats have long chains of saturated carbon s. Addition reaction is carried out in the presence of Ni as a catalyst. This reaction can be given by following equation:
